Cognitive Load and Lie Detection
Have you been keeping up with research in "lie detection?" Aldert Vrij has been researching this subject and is on the forefront of research in the field on what is called the Cognitive Load Theory, an approach to lie detection which taxes the thought process of the individual being questioned. The theory states in part that an individual has to "think" harder when lying. The cognitive load approach varies from arousal-based models which assume liars will be more aroused under questioning because of the fear of getting caught. Check here for related information on evidence based interviewing...

Effective Interrogation Methods
There have been several articles in newspapers and on television shows depicting the use of harsh interrogation tactics in law enforcement and within military interrogations. A recent news article I came accross compared the current interrogation tactics with those of WWII. One of the issues is the current acceptance and use of "harsh" tactics to gather information and intelligence, which is archaic and often unsuccessful to begin with, and even if any information happened to be obtained we would have to question the reliability due to the methods used. As archaic as those methods are, over 60 years ago in WWII some of the interrogators within the German Luftwaffe employed much different tactics...establishing rapport and treating their prisoners fairly and professionally. Eventually they trained U.S. Air Force personnel in these tactics. For an interesting read check out "The Interrogator: The Story of Hanns Scharff Master Interrogator for the German Luftwaffe" http://www.amazon.com/Interrogator-Joachim-Luftwaffe-Schiffer-Military/dp/0764302612 Also, for additional training and information check out our Interview & Interrogation group at

Gender Differences and Deception
I recently participated in an interview with Dr. Kingsley Stewart from the radio program "Up Front" on Newstalk 93 FM in Kingston, Jamaica. The topic for the week was deception, with some of the focus directed on gender differences when it comes to deception. I would like to continue this discussion and ask two things;
1) Do you think men or women are better at being deceptive?
2) Do you think men or women are better at detecting deception?
1) Do you think men or women are better at being deceptive?
2) Do you think men or women are better at detecting deception?

"The Book Shelf"
It has been said that you will be the same person you are today 5 years from now, except for the people you associate with and the books you read. Lets use this section to share with others what books influenced YOU the most, thereby providing a reading list for everyone to view. We can then review the list and see which books appear to be the best investment of our time and money, and remember, as Benjamin Franklin said, "An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest."
